L Ergothioneine (mercapto-histidine trimethyl inner salt, ergothioneine, EGT) is a compound discovered in 1909, originally found in a fungus, Claviceps purpurea, which in pure form is a white crystal, water-soluble, (0.9 mol/L at room temperature), and does not oxidise itself at physiological pH or in strong alkaline solutions. It exists in two isomers, thiol and thione forms.
Ergothioneine is a natural antioxidant, which can have a protective effect on cells in the human body and is an important active substance in the organism. Natural antioxidants are safe, non-toxic and have become a hot topic of research. As a natural antioxidant, ergothioneine has come into people's view, which has many physiological functions such as scavenging free radicals, detoxification, maintaining DNA biosynthesis, normal cell growth and cellular immunity.
Xi'an Huawave Biotech Co., Ltd. is a professional Ergothioneine manufacturer and Ergothioneine  supplier . We are committed to providing customers with professional research and development, production and sales, as well as OEM and ODM processing services.

L Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring thioamino acid with strong antioxidant properties. It was originally isolated from mushrooms and is synthesised in nature mainly by fungi. Due to its unique chemical structure and biological properties, ergothioneine has applications in the fields of medicine, nutrition and cosmetics. Here are some of the main effects of ergothioneine:
1. Strong antioxidant effect:
  • Ergothioneine has a superior antioxidant capacity that scavenges free radicals and protects cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. This ability helps to slow down cellular aging and protects cellular health.
2. Protection of DNA:
  • Ergothioneine protects DNA from oxidative damage, which is important for maintaining genetic stability and preventing oxidation-related diseases such as cancer.
3. Anti-inflammatory effects:
  • Studies have shown that ergothioneine has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammatory responses and help control the progression of diseases caused by inflammation.
4. Eye health protection:
  • Ergothioneine may protect the eyes from UV damage and may help prevent age-related eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
5. Promotes skin health:
  • When it comes to skin care, ergothioneine can help prevent skin aging by reducing skin damage from UV exposure. In addition, it can help improve skin pigmentation problems for a more even skin tone.
6. Promote wound healing:
  • Ergothioneine helps to promote the wound healing process by accelerating the repair of damaged tissues through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
7. Improves Nervous System Function:
  • Certain studies suggest that ergothioneine may have a protective effect on the nervous system, helping to improve cognitive function and may play a role in preventing neurodegenerative diseases.
8. Improvement of immune function:
  • Ergothioneine may help enhance the function of the immune system, supporting the normal functioning of immune cells through its antioxidant effects.
Ergothioneine has a wide range of applications in several fields due to its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Here are some of the major application areas of Ergothioneine:
1, Nutritional supplements:
  • Antioxidant supplements: Ergothioneine, as a highly effective antioxidant, is added to a variety of nutritional supplements to enhance the body's antioxidant capacity and reduce cellular damage caused by free radicals.
  • Immune Support: Ergothioneine enhances the function of the immune system and is therefore also used in immune-boosting supplements.
2, Skincare & Cosmetics:
  • Anti-Aging Products: Due to its antioxidant effects, ergothioneine is used in anti-aging skin care products to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and slow down skin aging.
  • Skin Lightening & Even Skin Tone: Ergothioneine's ability to reduce skin damage from UV exposure helps improve uneven skin tone and is used in skin lightening and even skin tone products.
  • Sunscreen adjunct: Although ergothioneine is not a sunscreen ingredient per se, its antioxidant properties can help reduce skin damage from UV rays, and it is added as an adjunct ingredient to sunscreen products.
3, Pharmaceuticals:
  • Ophthalmic applications: ergothioneine has a protective effect on the eyes and can be used to prevent and treat age-related eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
  • Neurological protection: ergothioneine may help protect the nervous system and prevent the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
4, Food Industry:
  • Functional foods: Foods rich in ergothioneine (e.g. mushrooms, legumes, etc.) are considered to have high nutritional value. In the food industry, ergothioneine may also be added as a functional ingredient to specific foods to enhance their health benefits.
