Rutin, also known as rutinoside, rutin nf11, with molecular formula C27H30O16, is a natural flavonoid glycoside, belonging to the flavonol ligand widely found in plants, the two ligands are glucose and rhamnose. Appearance is light yellow or light green crystalline powder. Soluble in pyridine, formyl and lye, slightly soluble in ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate, almost insoluble in chloroform, ether, benzene, carbon disulfide and petroleum ether. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-allergic and antiviral effects.
- Rutin is a flavonoid compound, a strong antioxidant for scavenging free radicals, which can terminate the chain reaction of free radicals, inhibit the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the biofilm, remove lipid peroxidation products, and protect the integrity of biofilm and subcellular structure, which plays an important role in the organism.
- Lipid peroxidation is a series of oxidation processes caused by reactive oxygen radicals attacking polyunsaturated fatty acids in biological membranes. Rutin has antioxidant effects against the decline in antioxidant capacity caused by the decline of endogenous estrogen. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) has anti-atherosclerotic effects.
- Rutin could concentration-dependently antagonize the specific binding of PAF to rabbit platelet membrane receptor, inhibit PAF-mediated rabbit platelet adhesion and the increase of free Ca2+ concentration in PMNs, indicating that the mechanism of action of rutin anti-PAF is through the inhibition of PAF receptor activation, and then block the PAF-induced response, thus playing a cardiovascular protective role, and the results showed that rutin is a PAF receptor antagonist.
- Rutin can effectively prevent the occurrence of hypocalcaemia and reduce the Ca2+ concentration in pancreatic tissue. It was found that rutin could increase the content of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in pancreatic tissues, suggesting that rutin may have an inhibitory effect on the release and activation of PLA2 in pancreatic tissues; rutin could effectively prevent the occurrence of hypocalcaemia in AP rats, probably by preventing Ca2+ inward flow and reducing the Ca2+ overload in pancreatic tissues, which could alleviate the pathophysiological damage of AP.

- Prevention and treatment of vascular diseases: rutin has the effect of maintaining vascular resistance, lowering vascular permeability, reducing fragility, etc., and it has the effect of expectoration of fat on fat-infiltrated liver. Clinically, rutin is used in the treatment of hypertensive cerebral haemorrhage, diabetic retinal haemorrhage, haemorrhagic purpura and acute haemorrhagic nephritis. By enhancing vascular elasticity and improving vascular function, rutin helps reduce the risk of these diseases.
- Anti-inflammatory effect: Rutin has an anti-inflammatory effect that reduces inflammatory reactions and relieves inflammatory symptoms. This helps improve the condition of patients suffering from hypertension, cerebral haemorrhage and cerebral infarction.
- Antiviral effect: rutin also has an antiviral effect, which can inhibit the replication and spread of viruses, thus playing a role in the treatment of viral infections.
- Rutin is widely used in the field of nutraceuticals due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It can be used as a nutritional supplement to help enhance immunity, delay aging and prevent diseases.
- Antioxidant function: rutin has antioxidant function, which can remove free radicals and reduce the damage of oxidative stress on the skin, so as to protect the skin health.
- Sunscreen function: rutin has a strong absorption effect on ultraviolet rays and X-rays, so it can be added to cosmetics as a natural sunscreen agent to improve the effect of sunscreen.
- Food colouring: Rutin has a similar lemon yellow colour and can be used as food colouring to add colour to food.
- Antioxidant: Rutin can also be added to food as an antioxidant to prolong the shelf life of food and keep the freshness and taste of food.
