What is Sesamin?
Sesame Extract Sesamin, belonging to the class of lignan compounds, is a natural antioxidant and the primary active ingredient in the seeds or seed oil of Sesamum indicum DC., a plant belonging to the Pedaliaceae family commonly known as sesame. Besides sesame from the Pedaliaceae family, sesamin has also been isolated from various other plants. For instance, it has been found in Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum (a plant in the Aristolochiaceae family), Zanthoxylum nitidum and Zanthoxylum cassia (both belonging to the Rutaceae family), Cuscuta australis (a traditional Chinese medicine), and Cinnamomum camphora (camphor tree). Although these plants all contain sesamin, their sesamin content is inferior to that found in sesame seeds from the Pedaliaceae family. Sesame seeds contain approximately 0.5% to 1.0% of lignans, with sesamin being the most prominent, accounting for roughly 50% of the total lignan compounds.
