Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), a dicotyledonous plant of the family Labiatae, which is a light yellow powder at room temperature with a bitter taste. Difficult to dissolve in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. It shows green colour when met with ferric chloride and produces orange precipitate when met with lead acetate. Dissolved in alkali and ammonia, it shows yellow colour at the beginning, and soon turns into black brown colour. Has significant biological activity, with antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol, anti-thrombosis, relief of asthma, diarrhoea and detoxification, haemostasis, foetal protection, anti-metamorphosis and antispasmodic effects, but also for the mammalian liver salivary enzyme specific inhibitors, with the regulation of certain diseases, but also has a strong anti-cancer response to physiological efficacy.
