Vitamin B3 belongs to the B vitamin family and includes three vitamin isomers, niacin(Nicotinic acid), nicotinamide(Niacinamide), and nicotinamide ribose. All three vitamin isomers are converted to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in the body. Life requires NAD and the body cannot synthesise NAD without vitamin B3 or tryptophan. nicotinamide ribose was recognised as one of the vitamin B3s in 2004.
Plants and animals can synthesise niacin from tryptophan.
Nicotinic acid is found in many foods, with the highest levels found in meat, poultry, tuna and salmon, and lower levels found in nuts, legumes and seeds. Niacin as a nutritional supplement can treat pellagra caused by vitamin B3 deficiency. Symptoms of pellagra include skin and oral lesions, anaemia, headaches and fatigue. Many countries require niacin to be added to flour and other grains to prevent pellagra.
Niacinamide is a component of the cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+). Although Nicotinic acid and Niacinamide are identical in vitamin activity, nicotinamide as an amide does not reduce cholesterol and does not cause flushing. Because flushing is considered an adverse reaction, nicotinamide is recommended as a treatment for vitamin B3 deficiency.
