Chondroitin sulfate (CS), a class of glycosaminoglycans covalently attached to proteins to form proteoglycans. Widely distributed in the extracellular matrix and cell surface of animal tissues, chondroitin sulphate has a glycan chain consisting of alternating glucuronic acid and N-acetylgalactosamine polymerised to serine residues of core proteins via a saccharide-like linkage region.
Although the main chain structure of the polysaccharide is not complex, it shows a high degree of heterogeneity in terms of the degree of sulphation, the sulphate group and the distribution of the two differentially oriented isomeric glucuronides within the re-chain. The fine structure of chondroitin sulphate determines functional specificity and interaction with a wide range of protein molecules.
